Alongside the rich variety of sweets that are typical of the Sardinian tradition, Alghero also offers unique recipes that are the fruit of its ancient Catalan soul.
Menjar blanc
This is a sort of blancmange that is very popular in Alghero and is probably Andalusian in origin. Simple to prepare, it has a delicate taste. Almond cream – in the Tortas e Tabaqueras variant – is simply enclosed in a covering of sweet puff pastry.
Ous de buchacas
Literally translating as "pocket eggs", this sweet is unfortunately at risk of disappearing. It takes the form of large spheres of anise bread covered by a sweet, white glaze of sugar.
Anise bread
As part of the tradition of preparing titbits for children on feast days, throughout Sardinia the most common delicacy is called Sa pippia, a sweet dolly made of bread. In Alghero, there is a preference for the use of anise bread in the shape of a seahorse, always served under a glaze of sugar.
