Lake of Baratz

Lake Baratz, Sardinia’s only natural lake and a place of extraordinary value in terms of its natural history, is one of the favourite destinations in this area.

Nature lovers and birdwatchers will discover that Lake Baratz offers the opportunity to explore what is a UNESCO-recognised site that stands out both for its incredible geology and for the wealth of flora and fauna that populate the area.

Having made your way along any of the numerous paths that pass through the thick pine forest and the colossal, 30-metre-high sand dunes that surround the lake, you will reach the shore.

You are sure to be fascinating by the myths and legends that concern the lake and also by the history of the bottom of the lake, which – at the end of the Second World War – became an improvised repository for German munitions and mines.

How to get there
Starting from Alghero (20 km away): once you have passed through the town of Fertilia, at the junction take a right and join the road marked as "Statale 291", heading towards Santa Maria la Palma. After around 8km, on reaching the junction for Capo Caccia, turn left. Travel along this road for 2 km, until you see the sign for Baratz on your right.
