The Palazzos

Wandering around the historical centre of Alghero, you can easily "read" the city’s past, thanks to the wonderful stylistic and architectural elements of its numerous old palazzos, which were built for prominent Catalan nobles. If you want to discover some of the more characteristic dwellings, you need simply stroll through the main streets of the old town, where you will see dozens of them.

Some of the most notable historic buildings that embellish the city centre and reveal the often dramatic vicissitudes to which Alghero has been subject over the centuries include:

Palau Carcassona, in Via Sant’Erasmo, renamed Palau Real following a requisition on the part of the Crown, to the detriment of the aristocratic Carcassona family; Palau Albis, built in the Gothic style in the early 16th century; and Palau Peretti, initially owned by the House of Gustavo Duran, which then passed into the hands of the Peretti family, originally from the nearby island of Corsica.
