The Fortified City

The imposing Medieval bastions and defensive towers mark out the unmistakable outline of Alghero and enclose fascinating architectural testimonies that reveal the city’s indelible Catalan soul.

Walking through the city, you will find it easy to see the signs of the periods of Spanish and Aragonese domination, particularly in the historical centre.

To get your journey started, all you need to do is to make your way into the labyrinthine alleyways that, beginning in Piazza Sulis – the square for the Algherese – follow the line of the sea, traced out by the bastions named Cristoforo Colombo, Marco Polo, Pigafetta and Magellano.

Protected by high surrounding walls and by numerous defensive towers, the city centre plays host to myriad treasures; immersed in the aromas of its flower-laden squares and the Catalan "carrer" (streets), you will reach the city’s ancient Jewish quarter, Kahal, one-time site of the Synagogue.

Staying close to the perimeter of the ancient walls, from the Forte della Maddalenetta you are sure to enjoy the tranquillity of the new Barcellona promenade, which is the perfect synthesis of ancient and modern.

The landscaped promenade stretches for 2km and is flanked by small cafes and a much-used cycle track. The promenade was designed by celebrated Catalan architect Joan Bousquet.
