Fertilia

Continuing your trip outside the fortified citadel, you would do well to stop off at the delightful village of Fertilia.

Situated just a few miles from Alghero, Fertilia is a pragmatic example of the Rationalist architectural style that prevailed during the twenty-year Fascist dictatorship in Italy.

Established in 1936 following the reclamation of the surrounding territory, the village uses the materials and town-planning solutions also utilised in the new towns of the Pontine Marshes near Rome.

But over and above the architectural aspects, throughout the year there are numerous excellent opportunities to discover the village and learn about its history and traditions.

On 25 April, Fertilia celebrates its patron saint, Saint Mark, by recalling the Istrian and Dalmatian origins of the villagers who fled to the town during the Second World War. In August, there is the Tourist Festival, which allows visitors to sample the delights of the local cuisine.
